A Simple, Recycled Wine Bottle Vase (With Video)

Nov 29, 2012 09:54 PM

At Advanced Labels we enjoy creating gorgeous wine bottle labels as much as we enjoy sharing a glass of our favorite wine with friends.

But what happens when the bottle is empty? Did you know that once glass has been colored, it can only be recycled into glass of the same color? For this reason, some areas don’t accept colored glass in their recycling bins. In many cases, colored glass is simply destined for the land fill.

We’ve discovered a simple way to recycle your glass bottles into elegant vases. Similar products are currently being sold for more than $40 from various online retailers. If you like the idea of hand made gifts, we think these would be great for Christmas!

A cut wine bottle makes a vase
All you need is a cheap glass cutter and a kitchen sink

Ready to get started? It’s remarkably simple. Just order a glass bottle cutter (here’s one from for $25), and while you wait for it to arrive start emptying some bottles. Pace yourself, or you’ll be in no condition to answer the door when the delivery person arrives. With just the glass bottle cutter and your kitchen sink, you’ll be ready to make your own vase in under a minute.

Using the technique in the video below, you can easily create custom recycled glass bottle vases from your left over wine or spirit bottles.

With many methods of glass bottle cutting you can expect to salvage only about half of the bottles you cut. The author of this instructional video claims to successfully cut 9 out of 10 bottles.

The nice thing about this simple technique is that you don’t have to cut through the whole bottle, you just need to score it once.

Watch the video below and prepare to be amazed!

Let us know if you give this a try, we’d love to see the results.
